Chapter Seventeen

After Vickie returned to the house, she spent the rest of the afternoon in her room, watching her giant TV and sending Facebook messages to Eric. Alexis remained on the couch in the living room, listlessly watching a variety of TV shows and movies and getting up only occasionally to get a snack.

Eric: How’s your nose?

Vickie: It’s okay now. It hurt for a while, but once it popped back into place, the pain went away

Eric: That’s good

Eric: Those girls are real jerks

Vickie: Yeah. Can’t do anything about it though. Don’t know how much more of it I can take. I hope this isn’t how high school will be for the next couple of years

Eric: It won’t. Besides, you have friends. Me, Jess, Jamie, Alexis

Vickie: I’m not so sure about Alexis anymore

Eric: Really? Aren’t you two hanging out a lot this weekend?

Vickie: Nope. She has barely moved this entire weekend so far

Eric: Is she sick?

Vickie: No, she’s just lazy. She says this is how she used to be bored during the summer, whatever that means

Eric: Are you two still fighting?

Vickie: idk? We’re not hanging out like we usually do, that’s for sure

Eric: I think you should go hang out with her now. Go watch TV with her. Something. You two can’t hate each other all the time

Vickie: I don’t hate her. I only wish she would show me a little respect

Eric: You want me to talk to her?

Vickie: No, I should. But I don’t know how much things have cooled off. I’ll go hang with her for a while and see what happens. Ttyl

The vampire walked into the living room. Alexis appeared to have barely moved since the last time she saw her on the couch.

“What are you watching?” Vickie looked at the TV with confusion. She saw huge spaceships hurtling through space and images of young, handsome men firing laser guns at each other.

“It’s a movie. Star Wars.” Her sister stuffed a few kernels of popcorn in her mouth.

“What’s it about? Do you mind if I join you?”

Alexis gestured at the recliner with her hand but didn’t move her gaze from the TV. “Go for it. It’s kinda hard to explain. There’s a big, evil dude named Darth Vader who’s trying to take over the galaxy. Luke Skywalker is the guy who has to put together a team to defeat him. It’s a fun movie. Old, but fun.”

Vickie relaxed in the recliner, put her feet up, and watched the movie.

Ding. Her phone went off with a text message notification. She picked it up, unlocked it, and chuckled as she read the message. She typed a response and put her phone down. “Have you seen this movie before?”

“Yeah, a few times.” Alexis stretched on the couch. “I don’t know if I’ve ever actually sat and watched it straight through in one sitting. But I’ve seen all of it.”

Ding. Vickie read another text, laughed quietly, typed a response, and put the phone down.

“It’s actually from the 1970s, so it’s fairly old.
